Music: 2010- Carmine P. Filthy's Loves, Lusts and Last minute romances

ARTIST OF THE YEAR: James Blake

This young and unassuming British boy won my heart over in near orchestral movements this year. Every few years I fall for a new artist as hard as I fell for James Blake. Klavierwerke EP, CMYK EP and The Bells Sketch are essential dirges to the last decade of music and beyond. Sampled vocal snippets, that you faintly remember hearing once before but, probably haven't, weaved within bottomed-out bass lines and synths from Wonderland. His debut self-titled full length will be released on Feb. 7th. That date just can['t arrive quickly enough.

P. Filthy's Album Picks: (In no particular order)

So rather than min-paragraphs waxing on about the wax that made me pay closest attention this year, I am instead opting for the often ignored album cover this year. Some of these covers tell you exactly what they are while others are as obtuse as the music contained within. I am still a massive vinyl collector and more than a few of these album covers can be found in my crates.

Overall this was an adventurous year for music and myself. I made the journey to New Orleans to live here back in the Spring. I've enjoyed many of these album riding my bike through city park or down to the F.Q. for some record shopping and beer drinking. I played some of these records at Voodoo Experience, at The Saint, in my house in Mid City and even opening for Matthew Dear on his first New Orleans appearance which I helped coordinate. This is a perfect town for musical freedom and experimentation. I am looking forward to the coming year and what it has in store for me. Much love to the Crescent City and all the people I love here. You know who you are.

P. Filthy's Favorite Gear of the Year:

The TMA-1 by AiAiAi are the pair of headphones I've had designed in my head since I started DJing. Minimal, effective, sturdy, noise canceling and plenty of delicious mouth watering BASS. I have zero problem singing from the mountain tops about how amazing these headphones are since all DJs seem to inevitably end up with the same pair on.

And considering Matthew Dear, Claude Von Stroke, 2 Many DJs, Hot Chip, Flying Lotus, Kode 9 and Koze just to name a few were directly involved with the development-you don't really need my stamp of approval.

Thanks for reading over the past year. It's been the most effective year for me sharing what I'm down with and what makes me nod and smile once more just like it was happening for the first time.

Friends of Friends Music presents 'Pop Massacre'

In an attempt to showcase some of their favorite people, Friends of Friends put out a call to a whole slew of producers. The request was simple... "choose a song from any era of popular culture to be source material of a song for our 'Pop Massacre' compilation." They're proud to say that the project is done! All they ask of you is your email in exchange for this 13 track (all exclusive!) killing of Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Beach Boys, Spice Girls, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Soulja Boy and others.

And you know how much P. Filthy loves a cover song.

DJ Fame

Amos Damon has been a great friend of mine since I first tapped him for a gig at a little party I used to produce in NYC. He's by far one of the most laid back and funny dudes I've come into contact with in the DJ scene. A stand up guy to say the least who has been making moves for quite some time now.

Amos Damon aka DJ Fame has the Midas Touch. His first major accomplishment? After over a decade of holding down NYC as a DJ and promoter with a coveted residency at Sullivan Room, DJ Fame released the Name It X EP in 2006 on a little label from the UK called Dubsided that belongs to a producer named Dave Taylor aka Switch. Fame was the first producer from the US to have a release on this now-legendary label and the EP got massive support from everybody who is anybody in house and techno. All right, fine. Then what happened? In 2007 a new label from Chicago got its humble beginnings: Potty Mouth Music. They debuted with a release from an Italian act you might have heard of: Crookers. The next release...yep, DJ Fame with the Ghetto Dayz EP.

Following this success, Fame joined forces with Gaby Dershin of Astro & Glyde to form Bit Crushers. Their tracks have appeared on major labels such as Ultra and Perfecto as well as underground imprints like Lee Mortimer’s Warehouse Music, not to mention a serious licensing project with their track "Wanna Ride" on a mobile video game by Nokia. No big deal.

Ok ok, the guy has some cred. So what is he doing now? Great question. Fame’s track record, production skills, DJ talent, business savvy and music-forward ears caught the attention of Eric Sharp, an impresario who was throwing loft parties and club events in the rainy city of San Francisco. Fame came out and smashed a couple of the Rock It Science warehouse parties while at the same time as Eric was building a new label - Rock It Science Laboratories. As Eric was a new producer, Fame helped him tremendously to get the label off the ground. Amos is now running A & R at Rock It Science Labs. Buckle up because his signings will begin hitting the streets in 2011. With Fame’s pedigree and refined tastes, expect some serious talent on original production and remixes that will shake clubs across the world.

Here we present a slamming new mix set from DJ Fame. This is (sadly) not the most frequent occasion, as Fame is a very busy man and rarely finds time to put mixes together. The mix comes in celebration of Fame’s latest release “Drop It Like,” the 5th offering on Rock It Science Laboratories which is now available at their beatport store (http://bit.ly/rockitport) and every major download store. Enjoy the mix, download, and pass it on!

Kotchy 'Two' (Done Right Recordings)

I've always been a fan of anything that combines intricate production qualities with R&B and Soul stylings. I've always taken to calling it Digital Soul. Kotchy is a master of this genre weaving the boom-bap of artists like J Dilla with the funky swing of Prince. His second full length 'Two' is due out in February. Here's a mix tape and a recent remix he did for Starkey.

"I found a bag of records being thrown out on the street, flipped through and made a joke it seemed like part of what would have been Janine's (the secretary and girlfriend of Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters) collection. So I decided to make some mashups and tracks restricting myself to her bag of records as source material/starting point. While listening to some of them, I saw someone running down the street wearing baggy spandex shorts." -Kotchy

Prefuse 73 & Jaytram (Yeasayer) rework Epstein (Asthmatic Kitty)

Basically anything Guillermo Scott Herren (aka Prefuse 73) touches is, at the very least, worth giving a listen. His sourcing of NYC producer/artist Roberto Lange' material for production components is no exception. Atmospheric squelches make room for spacious gliding synths and tunnel vocals which is no surprise since Lange' work as Epstein, the production name from which the samples came from travel a similar path.

The Epstein album and remixes released over the last year have been lovely in every way. Music for daydreamers and wanderers, to say the least.

Yeasayer drummer, Jaytram, also aides on the album taking on similar relaxed vibe with a bit more soulful play and 70's Sci-Fi stroke.

Check a track from each artist here.
