I am a junkie when it comes to lost dance music gems. In fact, I feel that the most amazing dance music ever recorded was during the first 20 or so years of its history. Disco to about the mid 90's era. BBE Records is a label to look to for reissues of those dusty lost records you'd be lucky to find. The 'Kings of...' series is a strong one and now they've branched out bringing in Brooklyn's DJ Spinna to select, remix and re-edit some of his favorite cuts from the Post Disco or Boogie era.
These tracks were the start of the Electro-funk movement which would lay the ground work for basically everything you hear in dance music today. The compilation will be a two disc set-disc one a continuous block party style mix from DJ Spinna and disc two 12 unmixed originals which until now were most likely lost in the haze of dance music past.
I caught DJ Spinna about 8 years ago in Chicago opening for Mr. Scruff. I highly recommend checking out one of his sets next time he's in your area.
The comp comes out on BBE on November 24th, so all you diggers better mark those calenders.

Fukkk Offf is back with a scorching second single from his debut album Love Me, Hate Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me. 'More Than Friends' has been the dominating track from the album with it's male/female hip hop duet about a sneaky encounter at the club and has been begging for an equally dominating remix package. Italy's CongoRock step up first with a club banger that is as reminiscent of old school Chicago jack tracks as it is telling of the future of dancefloor mayhem. CongoRock strips out most of the vocal leaving you with a heavy chant, driving rhythms and chaotic melodies. Markus Lange & StereoFunk take things way back to the land of 80's disco funk. Leaving the vocal intact with a new arrangement the ML & SF mix sits as well alongside Sugar Hill Gang as it does anything out there today; Timeless. The original is here as well with a new Dub mix from the main star at hand, Fukkk Offf.

On October 19th Hotflush recordings will release the newest offering from DubstepTech producer Scuba. The EP is called Aesaunic EP and will also be issued as a double 12"-love that! His productions are perfect for prime-time steppers, early arrivals and those staying for the dawn.
The title track Aesaunic is a whirling journey through Dub Techno and Dub Step weaving in and out with reverb and thud. The B side Flesh Is Weak would be the perfect opening track for a pummeling tech set. This will be a must have for all you echo heads out there.
Pick it up from Hotflush in a few weeks.
My co-worker and good buddy David mentioned this guy in passing one day at work while we were taking turns dropping band names back and forth to each other. Ducktails is one of my new favorite musical finds. Spacey, melodic, ambient and truly filled with heart. I've found three records released from Ducktails in the last year alone.
The MySpace page places them in New Jersey! Here's to the shore and a beautiful gift that seems to have washed up on it.
Ducktails 'Surf's Up' (YSI)
Ducktails is on tour now:

Today marks the release of Kyp Malone's first solo full length on Anti records. If you've been living under a rock, the project is called Rain Machine. As a massive fan of TV On The Radio, I was immediately drawn to this album much like 'Rachel Getting Married' which co-starred Tunde, the other vocalist in TVOTR.
The first two tracks I've heard are beautifully haunting and it's rather nice to hear Kyp's vocals float along with his intricate guitar work. I just ordered myself a copy, I suggest you do too. I also regret not doing more research sooner, because Kyp played a show at Bell House last night and I missed it. Argh.
Rain Machine 'Smiling Black Faces' (YSI)
Just got this in the email box...

UK-based 'Chamber Pop' in the vein of Polyphonic Spree meets Belle And Sebastian meets I'm From Barcelona.
Really fun and silly video. His new album was apparently inspired by a childhood trip to EPCOT.
Windmill 'Big Boom' (Direct Link)
Here's what he had to say about the trip:
"I remember that trip being perfect," says Dillon, 28. "My dad and my grandparents were there, my brothers and I were far away from the worries of adulthood. I have imagery in my mind from the EPCOT Center itself: colors, sounds, smells. The theatricality of it all was mesmerizing. Thinking back to it, I began to research the EPCOT Center itself. Some of Walt Disney's ideas were so wild and imaginative. It felt like a testament to the grand ideas of the '60s and '70s. It was planned as an entire city, but with every element designed from the ground up. I find it compelling that even when armed with the knowledge of our mortality, people's ideas are limitless."
WINDMILL "Epcot Starfields" is available now from Friendly Fire.
This band hardly sounds like they look, which I love. I also love these lyrics, simple, heartfelt and filled with some sort of wisdom that the band doesn't look old enough to have. Beautiful record to go with this cold wet September Friday. They will be playing Mercury lounge on my Birthday. Buying tickets now.

Azzido Da Bass is the newest signing to the label I work with, Coco Machete. This new offering picks up where 'Dooms Night' left off with vocals by Jence from Digitalism. Jence also gives the track a remix spin and Istanbul's Gooseflsh wreak havoc on it as well.

I just finished listening to the Experimental Dental School album 'Forest Field.' I could draw comparisons to Deerhoof and maybe some early K Records stuff that echoed the No Wave movement in NYC. The band is giving away the whole album for free on their site now.
I suggest you download it, because this band just gets it. I will most certainly seek out their next live show in my area to not just pay a cover, see them live but also grab a t-shirt because they have a pretty wonderful band name. Experimental Dental School. Ha! Radness indeed.

The most chilled space funk I've heard in a long time is still coming from my man Dam-Funk from the Stones Throw camp. I can hardly wait to have this whole package on vinyl.

TOEACHIZOWN VOL. 3: LIFE
Toeachizown will be released as a 5LP set in Fall 2009, with CD to follow.
This particular part of my debut; Toeachizown is Vol. 3 & it's called Life because these songs focus on relationships; good ones & weird ones (if U will). These songs also include vocals on all the tracks. The one I'm most proud of in this juncture of the album is “I Wanna Thank U (4 Steppin' Into My Life)” as it's dedicated 2 someone very special 2 me who came into my life at the right time and without judgement. It's a full song. Hook, verses, bridge and ready for radio play. I just wanted 2 show that I can actually create a full song (if and when I choose 2), and not only way out there beats & such.
All the songs on Life I hope connect with my friends who dig my take and contribution to this strain of Funk, which I consider Melodic-Funk, influenced by such great artist that came before me like: Loose Ends, KASHIF, MTUME, and some of Steve Arrington's (of SLAVE) more mellower solo joints. I also enjoyed creating “Could I Be Loosing Another Lover?”. This one's dedictated 2 all who may be able 2 relate 2 this type of situation. Bottom line, I just thank U 4 listening. Stay tuned for Vol. 4: Hood. Peace fam. – D-F

When it comes to the Anticon crew I am admit to not being a major follower. I am aware of their prime quality releases and definitely own tracks from any of the artists. In fact my first learning about many of the artists now on Anticon came from the Rope Ladder 12 compilation Mush Records put out like eight or nine years ago.
This track sound more like Grizzly Bear or Panda Bear or Paddington Bear...heh.

Dave Wrangler is a new name to me. He's a slick remixer keeping a nice almost Disco meets Hip House vibe. His production style would be at home next to Neptunes or DFA.
He most recently remixed YACHT Feat. Amanda Blank and sent it my way.

My boy Figure, who has a massive track on my label Buzzard Gulch right now on Attack of the Blog shot this new DJ mix series he's doing recently. He's got killer taste in the heavy bangin' sound of the moment. Download the mix free here. All the tracks are original productions or remixes he's done.
Plant Music is one of the first NYC labels I fell in love with when I first moved here four years ago. They are always on point with new doses of nu-disco and more.
