Bobby Evans "Freak-A-Zoid Robotz"

I first heard this track almost two years ago when I was working with Rick Ross and the Delicious Vinyl crew on promoting the 20 year anniversary compilation.

Love the video.

It’s time…to put your quarters up and check out the hottest video on the planet: Bobby Evans’ smash hit Delicious Vinyl single "Freak-A-Zoid Robotz", directed by Marcus Herring. Enter an arcade game world where a Tron state of mind and fly moves preside, where metallic Sorayama-inspired robots do choreographed dances and fight 8-bit battles to the death.

Director Marcus Herring: “The visual look of the video was inspired by the beauty of low resolution pixel art in classic arcade games. I was intrigued by the idea that a face can still look beautiful even when it is scaled down to a resolution of 12 pixels tall.” As Delicious Vinyl Curator Rick Ross, who produced the video, says: "We really aimed to break that proverbial fourth wall in the gaming universe — the fine line between man, woman and machine."

The video's concept was based on an original arcade game specially designed for the 12-inch artwork for Bobby Evan's "Freak-A Zoid Robotz." Herring expanded upon that arcade game concept, fleshing it out with a video full of players/gamers including L.A. Rap duo The Keyishe, Team G, performance artist Yasmine Kittles, dancer/choreographer Amanda Furches, dancer Erin Beneze, Anthony Julio (creator of the golden robot mask seen in the video) and the world famous KXLU DJ, Bianca Bracho.

"Freak-A-Zoid Robotz" is the lead track and theme song from Delicious Vinyl's critically lauded RMXXOLOGY album. The song itself is inspired by a truly obscure cut from deep in the Delicious Vinyl catalog: an electro-bass number called "The Fine Line Between Hyper And Stupid" that appeared on the b-side of Tone-Loc's 1990 single "I Got It Going On". With "Freak-A-Zoid Robots", Bobby Evans (half of L.A. hip-hop duo Brother Reade) has taken it back to the real pioneers of Miami Bass, with whip-it-good drums, ass-clapping bass, and synapse-snapping synthesizers...all perfect for robot booty shaking.

To increase the freak factor a full-on 3-D version of the video is set to drop in the coming weeks. If you have 3-D glasses (maybe dust off the pair you got at Disneyland from Michael Jackson's EO attraction?) you'll be able to put them to freaky use. We’ll be in touch again soon about that the 3-D version of the video. In the meantime, enjoy this great music video and a space disco remix of "Freak-A-Zoid Robotz" by L.A. talent Them Jeans (Dim Mak). It's time!

Awesome New Republic Birthday Remix

Miami's best band and electronic musician bring you a remix match made in heaven.

The Miami NewTimes' "Best of Miami 2009" issue declared Awesome New Republic and Panic Bomber the "Best Band" and "Best New Electronica Artist," respectively. Coincidentally, Panic Bomber had remixed and re-worked ANR's breakout single "Birthday" as his "Love Me Rough" version which brings ANR's shimmering pop sensation down to a darker, heavier thump complete with a brand new verse. Both groups are making waves in all directions, with ANR currently touring the West Coast, and Panic Bomber gearing up to assault the UK.

And here's a track from the 'Rational Geographic Vol. 1'::

Wax Works Vol. 1

I am starting a new little mix series dedicated to vinyl only called Wax Works. I basically plan on heading out every few weeks, buying some vinyl at used record shops and coming home and making a mix. I got this stack of records for about $20. There's some old Warlock house from Todd Terry, a killer dub of Bad Manners, some West End cuts and more.

Warp Records 20

As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, Warp will release a deluxe special-edition, titled Warp20 (Box Set). It features new songs, older previously unreleased material from Warp artists and tracks selected as the best of the labels output by Warp fans. It also includes a beautifully produced book showcasing the labels rich design history along with an exclusive hour long mix and locked-groove vinyl set.

I don't know about you, but I am ordering this now. Warp Records is a major influence on my taste over the years. I suggest you get it too.

Here's a few of my favorite early tracks from Warp:

Water Taxi Beach

I haven't been busy blogging as much this past week because I am busy helping run the show at Botanica.

Here's where I will be Saturday nights for the next few weeks. I think the first three weeks is going to be extra killer.

The Juan Maclean and NookaNooka

New York-based design company Nooka has collaborated with DFA Records on a toy and watch inspired by The Juan Maclean’s latest album, The Future Will Come. Designed by DFA’s art director Mike Vadino, and sculpted by LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney, the character iresembles Nooka’s official mascot, the NookaNooka. Get ready for one of the best electro records of the year!

'Fukkk Offf' Heerhorst has been renowned for some time in his hometown of Hamburg for storming live sets in the clubs scattered around the city’s red light district. "Die sündige Meile" or "the sinful mile" as it is known has seen its walls shaked and thighs quaked by the throbbing depths of Bastian's big room Fukkk Offf Sound.

After the first two hit singles 'I'm A Freak' and 'Rave Is King', of which the latter went to # 1 on the German Club Charts, FUKKK OFFF delivers his debut full length album 'Love Me, Hate Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me.' on June 8 2009 on NYC’s Coco Machete Records.

The Album which includes his previous singles delivers even more flavor from the hip-house party rocking duet ‘More Than Friends’, featuring NYC rappers Razor Cain & Hazel, to the fashionista anthem ‘Famous’. With turns dark and menacing then veering towards moments of playful funk and kitsch, 'LMHMKMKM' doesn’t let up on its grand tour of the discerning late night dance floor.

The first single and title track comes with scorching remixes from recent Coco Machete signing Disco Of Doom & CCM mainstay SCNDL Incorporated.

Stereoheroes and Pony Pony Run Run

I've been really crazy for vinyl again. Which is leading me into a lot of older sounds since new vinyl is quite expensive. This means I've been listening to less digital music over the last two or three weeks.

Then this remix popped up from Stereoheroes, my new friends who will be featured on my next compilation 'Attack of the Blog.'

Their remix of Pony Pony Run Run is playful and thumping as I've come to expect from Stereoheroes. A nice little late Spring ditty to keep you shakin' right into Summer.

Pony Pony Run Run will release their album, "You need Pony Pony Run Run" on June 15th.

Mr. Scruff Sunday Best Review

This past Sunday I headed over to The BKLYN Yard to catch Mr. Scruff and The Sunday Best crew. Last time I caught Scruff on the decks was almost 9 years ago. As expected, Scruff came with the funky fire that you come to expect. This party was my favorite from last Summer and hopefully this year they will get better weather, because from the looks of the crowd, the word is out. Big shout out to Eamon Harkin for hooking me up with the press pass. I am really looking forward to Classic label head Luke Solomon this Sunday, June 7th. See you on the canal bank.

Here's a favorite track from Mr. Scruff's recent output 'Ninja Tuna':

Mr. Scruff 'Get On Down' (320 kbps) (YSI)

And here's one from this coming Sunday's guest:

Luke Solomon 'Spirits (unreleased 12 inch demo version)' (320 kbps) (YSI)

Santigold & King Britt

King Britt and Santigold are long time friends. Here's King Britt's remix of 'Anne.'

And here's what King had to say about the mix:

"Santigold (Santi to me), has been a friend for a very very longtime. It has been a pleasure to see and hear her progression and success. From a killer album to touring with Kanye and Bjork to over 30 commercials on tv, Santi has hit the scene hard! She is currently in the studio with Pharell for her 2nd album.

But here, I finally present, by popular demand, my remix (or reproduction) of ‘Anne’. This song is a very heavy tune and I wanted to give Santi a very cinematic point of view. Santi loved it and we agreed to give it out. Guitars: Tim Motzer; Beats, Keys and Mixing: King Britt; Mastered by Shawn @ Optimum
So enjoy and please spread far and wide, King Britt"
