A'rdcore! Jungle Steppers and More.

Some days, like today, after I've put my liver through some serious a'rdcore action, I am ready to let my ear drums feel the burn instead of other organs.
I was raised on Jungle and Drum N Bass as my earliest forms of straight-up rave music. I've watched the scene change over the years getting very dark, constantly inventing new sub-genres like Dubstep, 2-Step, Speed Garage and more.
Here's a couple of tracks that have ended up on the old laptop one way or another recently. Not all Drum N Bass or Jungle, but somehow carry that vibe I had back in the day when I bounced around as a part of a gathered circle, waiting my turn to MASH UP DI DANCE.

The Count Of Monte Cristal and Hervé 'Jungle Steppers' (YSI)

Picked this one up from The Curb Crawlers who are always on point::

Morsy & Koko Dozo 'The Shine'

I love collaborations. I also love my friends here in NYC that continue to pound away at their art, despite the state of the country. Cosmic House act Koko Dozo got my boy Morsy to pop over to their studio and they ended up with a brokenbeat NYC House sound that proves the legacy of Masters At Work is still here, even in the indie scene. In fact, Morsy will tell you Louie Vega is his favorite DJ.

Koko Dozo, also recorded a new one called 'Gangsta' that I just freaking love. Great end of the night track. It's got that classic Chicago House sound that would easily fit in with a Trax Records set.

Favorite Sweet Voices: Phoenix & Junior Boys

Phoenix have been a favorite of mine for years now. I own 'United', 'Alphabetical' and 'It's Never Been Like That on Vinyl. I think 'United' is still one of the best debut albums to be released in the last 10 years too. I still wonder why they haven't broke into major American music culture but, in reality I spend very little time pondering popular American music culture. Well, the band are giving away the first single off their new album 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix' called '1901'. The album will be released worldwide on May 25th.
Phoenix '1901' (via RCRD LBL Link)

Another sweet voice I can't stay away from is Jeremy from Junior Boys, who also have a new album coming out called 'Begone Dull Care.' I've just listened to the album, and it's no surprise they don't disappoint.

I have a felling both of these albums are going to soundtrack my early Spring bike rides quite nicely.

Kris Menace releases 'Idiosyncrasies' (Compuphonic / Newstate)

Famed for his Italo disco-inspired tracks, Menace's debut single Discopolis became one of the biggest dance tunes of 2005, a bona fide Ibiza anthem that got picked up by Defected Records and helped lay the groundwork for Kris to become one of the hottest names in the scene.

Kris Menace 'Discopolis' (YSI)

Kris launched the label Compuphonic as a vehicle for his own productions and with this Menace's popularity continued to grow with tracks such as Voyage, Fairlight, Steamroller and Jupiter - the latter becoming one of Beatport's biggest downloads in 2006. He also began DJing with friend and legendary producer in his own right Alan Braxe, leading to the collaboration single Lumberjack released on Vulture Music in June 2007 (featured on this release). Kris is also the label owner of house label Work It Baby where he has nurtured the careers of Fred Falke, Patrick Alavi, Lifelike and Serge Santiago.

2009 looks set to be Menace's biggest year to date, starting with the release of his debut album, Idiosyncrasies. A triple disc collection of classic tracks interspersed with fresh new productions, collaborations and remixes; this release single-handedly proves a capsule-like answer why Menace has made such a big impact in the electronic scene to date.

CD1 opens up with the iconic Discopolis (with Lifelike) and features brand new tracks including Idiosyncrasy and next single Metropolis that clearly show Menace's ability to produce sharp, modern records that are flavoured with retro synth riffs and drum patterns. Classic back-catalogue tracks Jupiter and Voyage show off a spacey, tech-funk vibe while collaborations come from the likes of Hexstatic for the frantic re-edit of Invaders, house legend Felix Da Housecat for Artificial and Kris takes on a classic from dance pioneers Spooky and the results are the sublime Stereophonic. The first disc finishes with the current club destroyer Scaler that has everyone from Soulwax and Erol Alkan through to Style Of Eye and A-Trak saying claiming it's one of their biggest tunes.

CD2 eases in with the chilled Sensuality and follows with more atmospheric slices of electronica including Micropacer and Borderline that both share a blissful, warm ambience. Affinity and Lightning pick up the tempo for some more retro tech vibes and collaborations come from Douze for the sultry Challenger and Fred Falke joins Menace for Enamoured and Electricity.

CD3 showcases why Kris Menace is one of the most in-demand remixer's today, including re-rubs for DFA kings LCD Soundsystem, Everything But The Girl famed Tracey Thorn, Roisin Murphy, French electronica act Air, Metronomy and Robbie Williams.

Phonica Records & Hector

After five years as London's top shop for dance and electronic music, Phonica is launching its first imprint with an original production from its very own Hector, alongside friend and collaborator Ben Bryant, backed with a remix from Appleblim & Al Tourettes.

Since opening, Phonica has grown to become more than a record
store, but like many of its kind including Gramaphone in Chicago and Halcyon in New York-Phonica has become an institution. Operating at the center of London's electronic music community, Phonica is a true tastemaker: committed both to nurturing homegrown talent and to seeking out the best new music from around the world, with the emphasis always on quality. One of the things that has helped Phonica stay so on-point is the expertise and intuition of its staff, many of whom are prominent DJs/producers themselves – one such is Hector Murillo, who last year released his debut 12", 'La Raza', for Dinky's Horizontal imprint.

It makes perfect sense to have Hector release the shops first 12"-'Tension'. A hypnotic, dubbed out techno cut that evolves and involves you for its nine minute duration. Here's a cut called 'Yeah C'mon' from the Hector release that follows the same vibe.

Franki Chan, a man with a plan.

I've met Franki a few times before. He seems like a nice enough guy. I also like him because he knows, like I do from experience that Aoki is a punk. I also think Franki is a pretty great illustrator. And we have similar taste in music too.
I also love DJ mixes. So here you go.

Jesse Rose - Touch My Horn (Magoo's Mad Kid Booty 'n' Edit)

Felguk Vs Salt 'n' Peppa - Giddy Up (Sneaky Pete Mash-up)
Both are at a ready to drop and bang quality. Give them a listen.
Nice work boys.

Tonight you've got to be in Park Slope Brooklyn to hear the sordid standards and gutter stompers I'm bumpin' right now. See you there.

Party In My Head

Do you remember the days before the Blog? Back when you had to pour yourself over magazines and hit the record store two and sometimes seven days a week to grab that dope new import 12" or reissue?
Well, I would say, that the electro surge of the early 2000's is the movement that was Blog before blog was so in fashion or really existed for that matter.
I remember when I got home from Reckless Records that day with the Champagne 12" in my stack. It featured this stellar romp 1982:

This record would be the start of a long line of oddball dance records I would add to my collection- the road of Italo is a long and treacherous one I might add.
Well, after a bunch of research all I can say is I might be one of a lucky few to have the entire second album from Miss Kitten & The Hacker. The metadata says the album is called 'Two' which makes sense. These tracks show up nowhere I can find either.
So here's one from what I believe is the second album from the lovely duo:

Miss Kitten & The Hacker 'Party In My Head' (YSI)

Zero Yeah!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a special place in my heart. I can remember hearing their first EP and thinking this was something new. And speaking of something new...
'It's Blitz' is set to be released in the states, on April 14th. Here's the first single that officially comes out on Feb. 24th.

Yeah Yeah Yeah 'Zero' (YSI)

Bit Crushers!

My boys Bit Crushers sent some tracks from their recent catalogue my way. These are full quality tech-crunk stompers to fill the gaps in your set.

Bit Crushers are made up of DJ Fame (Dubsided/Pottymouth) and Gaby Dershin (Astro&Glyde-Bedrock).

The boys also just finished a big room mix for the freestyle classic 'Let The Music Play' by Shannon and an EP due out in May on Lee Mortimer's Wearhouse label.

Raving Rorschach!

The Blamma! Blamma! kids (who will be on the upcoming compilation, 'IT CAME FROM THE BLOG' set for release by my company Low Life Inc.) put together this video edit with one of their tracks backing it.

Chris De Luca vs. Phon.o :: CLP

A couple years ago I downloaded a remix by these guys of 'Hold On' by Apparat and it was my jam. These guys were ahead of the game in a way and a throw back in another. They had the Blip Hop shuffle I loved from heads like Dabrye and Prefuse 73 and now they line up just right with the Lazer Bass movement. They sent me this mix recently and I feel like this is going to be in heavy rotation as the weather gets warmer. C'mon spring! Get fresh.

Chasing Pavement

I really hold strong to the purpose of having a blog. I feel like there are many different ways to utilize them. I am choosing to be as open and available as possible. In a time when people all over the world can hide behind a guise via Online communication, I am making the choice to speak with an open heart- and I know how lame that may read to some.
I hadn't really followed the truly gifted Adele who, in case you live under a boulder, became the best new artist at the Grammy's.
She is going to make me smile today when I go chase some pavement up at Prospect Park.
Enjoy this one, she's popular for a reason, a good reason.
Download Adele 'Chasing Pavements' (YSI)
This woman has my new favorite voice at the moment.
Being honest will also mean not always posting the coolest most hip super rad remixes of the moment. I love too much music to do that.

Paris & Justus Kochncke.

Sometimes, a really amazing remix or track will slip right by me, no matter how dope and inventive and no matter how many blogs have mentioned it. No matter how many DJs have played it while I was in the room. Maybe it's that the track is so good it has a 'couldn't possibly be playing right now kind of vibe.' So here's one we can chalk up to not being able to catch every ball.

Friendly Fires 'Paris (Justus Kochncke Remix)' (YSI)

This really has to be one of my favorite late night tracks I've heard in a really long time. I'm feeling 3:30 AM next party for those who are still standing.

Be friends with Justus Kochncke Here.

Morsy ON FIRE!

My boy Morsy dropped this one on me a few weeks back. It's a peak time thumper sure to work the walls of your party.
And here's 2 more recent mixes from the man with the best specs and hat combo in the game too::

I'm On A Boat

DOWNLOAD The Lonely Island 'I'm On A Boat Feat. T-Pain' (YSI)
I have not been a big fan of SNL for over five years now. Of course I did start to catch more episodes during the election process to watch Tina Fey do her thing. Well these kids are pumping out some hilarious music these days. Make Adam Sandler with his acoustic look like an amateur. These guys actually have a full album coming out tomorrow. Now, 'Dick In A Box' was hilarious, and featured Justin Timberlake. This track features T-Pain and makes me laugh just as hard, even on the 20th listen. I'm a massive fan of the ironic Hip Hop parody, this one may well be my all time favorite right now.

Sordid Standards, a new mix from the CPF

I put this mix together today. I mixed it in one shot. There's a few slips here and there but, I like my mixes that way. I'm not into the mixes done in Ableton etc. These are some of my favorite tracks of the moment. Some are old, some new, and a few from my Coco Machete brothers including the upcoming SCNDL track 'Drama'.

Madchester Love!!!

I am a huge fan of music from the Madchester movement. This of course includes groups as varied as 808 State, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, James and The Sugarcubes.

Download The Sugarcubes 'Hit'taken from Sorted! Compilation (YSI)

This track has made it on to more mix tapes than I guess I care to admit. It's always one of the first songs I listen to right after crushing on someone for the first time. The track punches with that almost rage that is caused the first time you realize you're crushing on someone. Sometimes it's that night after the first kiss or first time meeting-but this track puts it out there plain and simple. 'This wasn't supposed to happen...I was happy by myself...accidentally you seduced me...I'm in love again.'

SIDESHOW Soundsystem Dub & P.I.M.P.

Sideshow 'If Alone feat. Paul St. Hilaire' taken from ADMIT ONE on Aus Music (YSI)

Sometimes, all I want to listen to all day is my stack of Dub records and Lee Perry albums. Especially during the winter. I guess it helps me pretend that I'm lying on a warm beach in Miami or Cape Town. This track is not by a Jamaican artist, but Fin Greenall's project Sideshow sure does rattle the bass cabinets of my soundsystem.

Check out the Resident Advisor review of the album here.

If you've ever talked music with me, you know I'm a huge fan of the cover song. I haven't enjoyed a cover this much since I first heard the Hot 8 Brass Band played 'Sexual Healing.'

The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band 'P.I.M.P.' (YSI)

Crate Diggers go grab the 7" at Dusty Groove America here.

What Is Up You All???

For me, Crookers can do no wrong. I've been bumpin' their tracks since I first got my ears on them. They are two of the best DJs around and have a sense for hot synth melodies and drum samples that are unmatched. Plus, they're Italian, which goes over really well with me, ya know? Viva la Crookers!
Download Crookers 'What Up Y'all?' Here (YSI).

The Beatdoctors

Here's some dope new Jackin' Fidget I've come to love. Especially 'Mama Mia'. These guys are from the Netherlands, which is no surprise to me, after I spent five days in Amsterdam back in October and saw the havoc Crookers caused on the dance floor. Whump. Wamp.
