Filthy Beats & Treats: Top Albums 2009

The best damn band to ever come out of Miami, hands down. John Hancock and B-Rob craft some of the best pop songs you've never heard. Catch them live for the full effect.

This album is just as charming and lovely as the film it soundtracks. My childhood favorite received lovely care by Spike Jonze.

Matias Aguayo landed one of my all time favorite tracks last year with 'Walter Neff.' This year he makes it on my top albums list with his second full length for Kompakt, 'Ay Ay Ay.' This album is indie techno at its best. I actually have not heard indie tech this good since Matthew Dear's 'Leave Luck to Heaven.'

Hyperdub imprint compiled the best of their last five years-this is the perfect primer for anyone interested in understanding the depth and massive span the dubstep sound has to offer. All the heavyweights have a track on this comp.

Kyp Malone released his solo debut this year under the Rain Machine moniker. The album showcases his beautiful voice and isolates his lyrical style. A must listen for any fans of TVOTR.

Shafiq Husayn 'Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka' is the debut solo full length from Shafiq, member of one of my all time favorite groups, Sa-Ra Creative Partners. This album picks up with same deep cosmic funk and soul you can expect from the partners et al.

This album reminds me so much of 'The Trial of the Century' by Brooklyn-based French Kicks. The album seemingly covers the entire rise and fall of a relationship. This is just one of those albums you have to listen to from start to finish. Also, check out the brilliant remix of 'Blue Skies' by The Twelves, featured on the year end mix tape.

Blue-eyed soul at its finest. I am really looking forward to the Jamie Lidell collaboration...not announced formally but suggested here first at the Filthy blog.

These four, now 20 year-old Brits have created a debut record that I can only describe as the new shoe gazer sound. Heart wrenching lyrics for such a young outfit and a great reason to start wearing all black again. I predict their sound picks up a bit on their upcoming efforts with an Indie meets Dubstep sound.

Quantic & His Combo Bárbaro is the newest band for the prolific Band Leader/Producer. On this album we get hard doses of Latin funk and boogie sounds. If you have not heard this album I suggest you pick it up to help keep those cold Winter nights a little more tropical.

No lie about this album-I own this because my mother suggested I check these guys out. This Austin, Texas based Garage-soul band released one of the finest debut records I've heard in a very long time. Every track holds its own as both timeless and fresh. I've got tickets to check them out live in Feb. at the Bowery. Can't wait.

Two of my favorite producers from recent years come together to work through one of my favorite genre-Reggae Music! Dance Hall, steppers, dub, rock steady and more are all in place with this Switch and Diplo collaborative full length.

Dub Techno can sometimes, like minimal, sound like the "jam band" version of "dance music." The crew over at Echospace finds a way out of that trap with carefully produced sonic structures. Luke Hess comes through with the perfect dose of dub sounds and atmospheric scapes.

Australian DJ/producer Cam Farrar brought us back to the days of the house that jack built. Booming classic Chi-town styled house music with 909, 303 and 808 all holding their own on this tribute to the original house sounds. Released on DJ Hell's International Deejay Gigolo label.

Best of 2009 Radio Show

This year was the start of some major changes in the way I live. I learned to appreciate the best parts of being alive. The people I love, the music I get to hear, the places I go to dance, the food I eat, the streets I ride my bike on, the cold pint sitting in front of me after a long night of work.

Filthy Beats & Treats Best of 2009 Mix Tape-not a 'DJ' mix, but some of my favorite tunes from the past year. Featuring Joy Orbison, Noah and the Whale, The xx, LCD Soundsystem, Matias Aguayo, Dam Funk, Mayer Hawthorne, Miike Snow, Classixx, Mark Ronson, Daniel Johnson, Awesome New Republic, Joker, Rain Machine, Florence + The Machine, Julian Lynch, Simian Mobile Disco!

See you next year!

DJ Hell Feat. Bryan Ferry

HELL FEATURING BRYAN FERRY 'U CAN DANCE' from Gigolo Records on Vimeo.

e.p. hall

e.p. hall is the dark folk brainchild of e.p., who creates thinky, creepy, guitar-and electrobuzz songs along with her musical partner in crime, Andy Goheen. The project has been described as having a “…haunting vocal style and unique fingerpicked
guitar combined with…warm and engaging keyboards and effects to create beautifully mournful songs”. Much of the content of e.p. hall’s songs emanates from a preoccupation with philosophy and psychological science, and each one is strung through with symbols, word games, and a tangible emotional intensity.

I feel this will really appeal to fans of Neko Case or Beth Orton.

Here's the title track from their new album 'Mommy Crow' out now on IFF-Transponder records (UK).

e.p. hall 'Mommy Crow'

These guys remind me of Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum which is awesome. They're from Norway and music writers from Pitchfork to The Wire have trouble putting their sound into a genre. I love when a band simply becomes their own genre. They have a new album due out in 2010 on Indie Recording called 'Blackjazz' which is definitely getting near what they sound like. I offer up Thrash Jazz as perhaps a better name for their genre.

Check them out for yourself with this edit of a song.

Keb Darge & Paul Weller present Lost & Found – Real R’N’b and Soul (BBE)

I have been trying to avoid just putting up press releases verbatim lately. However, in the case of this release and it's historical importance I decided the copy was too in depth for me to reword. Thanks to Justin over at rephlektor inkorporated for continuing to represent quality music.

"Here we are again with the second helping of “Lost & Found” gems. This time the focus is on underground dance music from black artists in the fifties and sixties. The maestro’s for this ride through the glorious past: Keb Darge and Paul Weller. Personal collections revealed…a golden age revisited.

Keb Darge has compiled more compilations for BBE than any other DJ selling close to 200,000 CDs and vinyl over a 10 year period. The legendary out-spoken Scotsman has been around the Northern soul & funk scene since the start and began his career as a dancer. (In fact, he’s the one responsible for first bringing the scene to London). As time when on and tastes changed Darge landed at Madame Jojo’s (in London’s Soho Disctrict) where his weekly party quickly ascended (and remains to this day) to the leading funk night in London. In 1996 BBE and Keb Darge teamed up to start releasing the now infamous Deep Funk and Funk Spectrum series that spawned a whole host of imitators. Today he holds two weekly spots at the club (Legendary Deep Funk –Fridays / Lost & Found –Saturdays, where he focuses on his current passion – underground 50’s music), travelling around the world DJing and running the label Kay Dee Records with Kenny Dope. He has achieved legendary status by far with a 40's to 70's musical knowledge second to none that’s perfectly reflected on all of his BBE compilations.

Paul Weller is an acclaimed Rock star and Soul music collector. Starting out with the very successful punk-rock band The Jam (1976-1982), Weller then went on to branch out musically to a more soulful style with The Style Council (1983-1989). In 1991 he re-established himself as a successful solo artist, and continues to remain a respected singer, lyricist and guitarist, a fact reaffirmed by his recent awarding of the 2009 Brit Award for 'Best Male Solo Artist'. He is also the principal figure of the 1970’s Mod revival and is often referred to as the Modfather. Weller has stated a wide range of influences throughout his musical career, frequently listing The Small Faces, The Beatles and The Who, as well as 1960s and 1970s soul music. Paul is also no stranger to the world of compilations and has contributed to the Back To Mine and Under the Influence Series.

Keb and Paul met over music, of course. It was a Keb Darge DJ set at a friends birthday party where Paul first approached Keb and mentioned how much he was enjoying the set. The two struck up a friendship and began DJing together at Madame JoJo’s and in Europe. As he always does with DJs, Keb kept a close eye on what Paul was pulling out of his record box. “Not a duff tune in sight, with records ranging from classic floor fillers to the super obscure. He was not tainted by any collectors’ scene attitude, just played the tunes he liked,” Keb says.

So here you have one great disc divided into two unmissible halves. Best of all, this music is selected by avid fans and great students of scene. It’s a positive education into where we are to day and how we got there. Enjoy!

Granddaddy 'Sophtware Slump'

I started cracking open the massive amount of CD books in my apartment this past week. Listening to this album brings back memories of a simple time when each album purchased was another document in the library of my listening life. 2000 was an interesting year in my life and this album reflects the space I was in. If you've never heard this album, I suggest you find it.

The subject matter involves 'problems concerning modern technology in society' and is more potent than ever before.

Actor Jason Lee has cited this song as the inspiration to name his child Pilot Inspektor.

Lovebox & Electric Minds Arthur Russell Tribute Album

Hot Blood is the first in a series of monthly parties produced by Lovebox where the
focus runs the gamut of ‘dance’, be it disco, house, techno, new wave, post punk,
funk, dub-step or the all encompassing re-edit culture.

Each party will showcase an artist, a label, an album, a shop, a sound, a region, a
country or anything that allows a focus on a ‘movement’ and the ranges of influences
and influencers in the multi-room space of the Relentless Garage.

The first party, a collaboration with Electric Minds, will serve as the launch party for The Arthur Russell Tribute Album which will include a screening of the celebrated
Matt Wolf documentary ‘Wild Combination’, introduced by Tim Lawrence, with a
number of live bands and DJs including Killer Whale (Live) who will perform their
contribution to the album project.

Dublab's Secondhand Sureshots

Secondhand Sureshots is a filmed experiment in creative sound recycling. Dublab Dublab directors Bryan “Morpho” Younce & Mark "frosty" McNeill sent beatmakers Daedelus, Nobody, J.Rocc and Ras G on safari into L.A. thrift stores with orders to make new music out of five finds while the cameras filmed the whole process. The result is a mini-documentary about putting new life into old vinyl. Over 2 hours of footage, music & bonus material.

Secondhand Sureshots will be released Feb. 9, 2010 as DVD & CD, distributed by Stones Throw. Today on our web store we present the exclusive Secondhand Sureshots Deluxe Super Set.

The Deluxe Super Set is a true sound and vision experiment. Dublab scoured Southern California and rescued 500 gatefold LP covers from dusty thrift store bin obscurity. Our graphic friends at Hit+Run took the covers and screen-printed them by hand, making new visual masterpieces to house the first public release of Secondhand Sureshots. Stuffed in this package is all-exclusive material sampled and shredded into new forms fine-tuned to blow your mind. We hope it inspires you to make your own creative gems and jams!

Polka Dot Dot Dot

I have had a love affair with Olympia Washington since I purchased my first 7 inches on K Records. I am always willing to give a listen to the sounds of that come from damp woods and the gray skies of Olympia.

Polka Dot Dot Dot are on Bicycle Records out of Olympia but actually first came together on a chance meeting in New Zealand at the Camp A Low Hum Music Festival. The three were able to combine their musical talents for a last minute set. Since then the trio comprised of Jordan O'Jordan, Onyx of Olympia, and Colleen Johnson or Twig Palace have released a full length called "Love Letter to New Zealand" with their second due out next week called "Syzygy" (a term that refers to planetary alignment).

Bot'Ox 'Blue Steel EP'

It was a Parisian encounter in a dark recording studio near République, under the mark of Saint Ambroise and in the middle of machines, synthesizers, effects emulators, where a pioneer bond was born. Hours of rush, borrowing here and there the roughest sounds for a tangible and sensorial experience, starting with abstract to cut, prune, saw, cut and cut, again and always, to find lucid melodies and blistering rhythms…or otherwise known…Bot’Ox

Bot’Ox is Julien Biffaz and Benjamin Boguet (AKA Cosmo Vitelli and one half of Tekel). In just five releases, Bot’Ox have cemented their place on the international scene with productions on prestigious labels such as DFA, DC recordings, Grand Central and I’m a cliché.

Following up the hugely successful single “Crashed Cadillac” comes the newest musical twist in the form of “Blue Steel.” Yeah, you can dance to it, but this is not merely a dance track. This is pure French pop with the misty voice of Anna Jean flowing over top of lofi melodies and blistering rhythms. In contrast, “Bearded Lady Motorcycle Show” is an electro dance rock stormer, perfect for crashing cars.

Out Nov. 9th on I'm A Cliché

railcars 'Passion of St. Edmund [Rebirth]' (Download via Terror Bird)

I have been on an unplanned kick with indie music lately that revolves around one man bands. Atlas Sound and Ducktails come to mind immediately.

Here's a relatively new noisegazer for you; railcars aka Aria Jalali. His first 7" was produced by Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu and he has a 12" EP out this week for the single 'Cathedral With No Eyes' on vinyl via Stumparumper. You can grab the EP digitally via Gold Robot.

The EP apparently recounts the life of Edmund the Martyr, a 9th century king of East Anglia with songs about his life and succession to the throne as a young boy, his conquests, his suffering at the hands of vikings and death by their arrows.

This record is pressed on 140 gram black vinyl and features full color pro-printed jackets and full color labels with artwork by Claudia O'Steen. Also included is an MP3 download card of the album.

The first 100 pre-orders will also receive an exclusive, hand-numbered, pre-order-only 8.5"x11" Railcars poster and a 1" pin featuring the album art. Also, ALL pre-order customers will be entered into a drawing to win a TEST PRESSING OF THE ALBUM!!! There are only 5 of these in existence, so this is quite an opportunity. Second prize will be a copy of Aria's almost-out-of-print first release, the Cities vs. Submarines 7" ep.

Today marks the release of my third A&R project for Buzzard Gulch. This time around we've gone real dark!

Evil Blog 2 picks up where the mind-melting invasion of Attack of the Blog left off. This time around Buzzard Gulch & Low Life Inc. has gone to the darkest spaces to discover the most tortured sounds available. Evil Blog 2 is filled with tracks that are sure to rattle the very center of your soul.

Frederick Olufsen returns with his ‘Step One (Lacrimosa)’- a classical experiment pondering how ‘doom’ is truly the first step. Disco of Doom have crept from the trenches with a ‘Warpig’ on their stake. LaTourette mangle your ears with a double dose of debilitating madness. And The Bass Knights create an Infernal Carnival where Polymorphic and the rest of the lot may evoke your deepest nightmares.

This is not a collection for the weary heart. Your nerves will be placed at the edge, taunted by the shadows, as the haunting sounds of Evil Blog 2 engulf you from within.

Sugar & Gold

San Francisco's Sugar & Gold hit some seriously funky smooth early 80's Italo vibes. This new EP from the band, 'AYA' makes me want to pull out all my Moroder, Cowley, Klein & M.B.O. AND Cerrone records, cover myself in glitter and dance like a fool around my apartment. Justin Van Der Volgen from !!! lends a remix and dub of the title track. There's a link below for a sample quality version of the remix that's only good for 100 downloads or 7 days. Pick it up the DJ ready version from Antenna Farm now. Direct link to purchase 1 of the 500 copies pressed on vinyl.

Sugar & Gold 'AYA (Justin Van Der Volgen remix)' (YSI)

I've been on a massive kick for all things soulful for months now. Trus'me is definite new addition to my heavy rotation. Much like the Mark Ronson album 'Version,' Mancunian Trus'me is readying for the release of his upcoming full-length 'In The Red' to be released on Fat City Recordings December 7th; where the producer collaborated with various producers and vocalists. I just got the album sampler promo from my friends over at Giant Step!

The sampler features an appearance by my new favorite space funk master Dam Funk from Stones Throw, the smooth vocal styling of Amp Fiddler and an absolutely classic cover of 'Sucker For A Pretty Face' (which I so am!) with vocals by Paul Randolph.
Trus'me is about to embark on a tour of Japan. I'm looking forward to his next trip to NYC.

John Morales 'The M&M Mixes'

John Morales was responsible for the club versions of some of the biggest records of the 80’s – From “Axel F”, “Rhythm of the Night” to “Dr Beat.” In addition he lent his talents to acts such as The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, The Commodores and Rose Royce and 80’s sensations like Debbie Gibson and Billy Ocean.

Universal Robot Band’s “Barely Breaking Even (Club Version)” (via Rephlektor)

The M&M Mixes is a history lesson in dance music. John formed with the late Sergio Munzibai M+M productions whose output of over 650 mixes will be unmatched by many celebrity big name remixers of today. From the Rolling Stones to Gloria Estefan, The Temptations to Hall and Oates, Aretha Franklin to BBE – we have all been moulded by John’s everlasting influence. This superb double CD presents some of John's finest works. CD 1 of classic boogie, cult favorites and unreleased demo mixes while CD 2 showcases - for the first time - previously unreleased mixes of gems from the legendary Salsoul catalogue from anthems like Ain't Mountain High Enough to underground faves Funk Deluxe. All the remixes featured on this compilation are never before released versions of some of his most influential works with the most credible dance artists of the 80’s. The whole compilation will also be available on all digital platforms and there will be a limited triple vinyl version of this release. 1000 copies only. Bottom line - this is the first ever compilation of his works.

The M&M stamp became synonymous with almost every major dance release of the era. In fact it wasn’t uncommon for the duo to remix upwards of 10 records in any given month. Alongside cult and groundbreaking records for the Fantastic Aleems (‘Get Down Friday Night’), Class Action (‘Weekend’), and of course Jocelyn Brown (‘Somebody Else’s Guy’) they refashioned certified pop smashes for DeBarge (‘Rhythm Of The Night’), Harold Faltermeyer (‘Alex F’), Shakatak (‘Down On The Street’), Miami Sound Machine (‘Dr Beat’), the Temptations (‘Treat Her Like A Lady’) and hundreds more in an eight year period that saw them almost an ever present on the Billboard Dance, R&B or Hot 100 pop charts. Tina Turner, the Rolling Stones, Spandau Ballet, Aretha Franklin, Shalamar, Hall & Oates, Dan Hartman, Candi Staton, Melba Moore, Rose Royce, Billy Ocean, Debbie Gibson, Odyssey, the Commodores and even Peter Schilling and Rod Stewart, in fact just about every major artist of the day was in someway retouched by the hands of Morales & Munzibai. M&M worked together till around 1989 (Sergio passed away in 1991) and John’s solo production projects in the ‘90s included such acts as Debbie Gibson, Brenda K Starr, Denise Lopez, The Thompson Twins, Blow Monkeys, Five Star and Art Of Noise. In 2009 John mixed several releases including the expanded version of Jackson 5 and Marvin Gaye albums.

So there you have it – a true legend. John Morales mixes are highly revered by classic DJs such as Dimitri from Paris, Louie Vega and Danny Krivit and the CD liner notes include interviews with Jocelyn Brown (Inner Life/Nuyorican Soul) and Legendary producer Patrick Adams (Salsoul – R Kelly, Sister Sledge and many more). Hell, John’s remix of Universal Robot Band’s “Barely Breaking Even” Is where BBE Records took its name from! John Morales will be DJing worldwide to promote this release with a UK launch Party in December at Cargo featuring DJ support from the legendary mixer Tom Moulton as well as a live pa from the one and only Jocelyn Brown.

BBE releases John Morales The M&M Mixes on January 19, 2010

Freedom, Rhythm And Sound out now from Soul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records are publishing a new 200-page deluxe hardback book, Freedom, Rhythm and Sound, compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker out today! Buy the book here at a limited discounted price.

There is also a double CD and 2 x LP album released to coincide with this book released on Nov 2, 2009. You can pre-order this or get more info HERE now.

This is a unique collection of cover artwork of revolutionary jazz music between 1965-83. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and the civil rights movement of the 1960s loom large as self-determination, economic power and musical freedom led to jazz artists finding new paths – both musical and economic.

Years before the D-I-Y cultural revolution of punk, Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and others ‘took control’ of their own work by recording, releasing and distributing their own music themselves.

The record sleeves of this era are as iconic and historically unique as the music itself and a striking reflection of the time; pre-desktop publishing, pre-internet these small-run (sometimes as low as 500 copies), self-made sleeves are graphically bold and radical.

‘Freedom, Rhythm and Sound’ is the first ever collection of this fascinating goldmine of album art, which represents the first wave of inspired independent production within popular music.

‘Freedom, Rhythm and Sound’ includes a large introduction contextualising the music and artwork as well as features on many of the people involved. Alongside the musicians mentioned above these include Rashied Ali, Steve Reid, Mary Lou Williams, Horace Tapscott, Lloyd McNeil, Tribe, The Last Poets, The Pharoahs, Philip Cohran, Black Artists Group and many others.

The CD released to coincide with the book features many of the artists – Sun Ra, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Archie Shepp and more.

Gilles Peterson puts the music to the sleeves on a recent podcast that you can download here.

Jenean Farris and Nico Turner are VOICEsVOICEs from L.A. Their debut EP 'Origins' was produced by Prefuse 73/Savath & Savalas main man Guillermo Scott Herren. The track below actually sounds like one that may have been plucked from the Savath & Savalas sessions. Rumbling and spacious with harmonized female vocals. Perfect for a chilly Fall day.

You can check out VOICEsVOICEs in NYC this week for the CMJ festivities and alongside another favorite of mine, Bright Black Morning Light.

'Origins' will be released 23 Jan. 2010 on Manimal Vinyl.
